While we are developing our products that leverage the latest in artificial intelligence and machine learning, we are also excited to support other teams who want some help. We are more than happy to support others as they start on their own AI/ML journeys or to lend a hand on other science and engineering projects that already have it all figured out. We strongly advocate for the need and utility of locally deployed models and custom hardware, which is often much more affordable and flexible than people realize, to serve environments where cloud solutions are not a good fit. We also have extensive experience deploying cloud-based AI/ML solutions that use Amazon Web Services (Bedrock, Sagemaker, Lookout, etc.) and Google Cloud Platform (Vertex AI).

Consulting and Third-Party Reviews

We regularly support colleagues and customers as a neutral third-party reviewer or to provided consulting on a longer timescale. We offer pro bono support for small third-party reviews or to 501(c)(3) non-profits on a case-by-case basis.

For consulting on a longer timescale, we prefer to classify the work under one of the other areas below so we can adequately staff and bill the effort. We do not work on retainer as “open” or “retained” consultants.

DevOps

DevOps is hard in any field, but it is especially hard in science and engineering. We know what it takes to deploy services written in multiple, largely forgotten languages on antique hardware with versions of Linux and Unix that are old enough to legally buy alcohol or have grandkids. We also know how to take these projects and modernize them for the latest cloud and exascale systems.

Experimental Planning and Execution

Our staff have conducted and supported experiments at the largest facilities in the world. If you need help planning or executing an experiment at a facility or in a lab setting, let us know. We are especially eager to help those who are working hard to keep data stewardship and data science in mind as they take their measurements.

Open Source Software Support

We are proud contributors to open source software at Band Gap and we are just as proud to offer support extending, developing, deploying, or contributing to open source software. Most of our open source development work happens on projects at the Eclipse Foundation or on high-performance computing and data processing pipelines.

Software Engineering

Software engineering is our bread and butter, and we offer support for the entire software engineering lifecycle and body of knowledge. We’re happy to take the lead on developing new products, especially products focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning, or to support development efforts that need folks who don’t mind doing more undesirable tasks.

Staff Augmentation

Finding the right staff is challenging and we know how hard it can be to hire and retain the best. We offer staff augmentation support to groups that need to work with a single partner to hire multiple scientists or engineers for dedicated projects. We also support organizations that need to hire unique candidates but must work with a contracting company to do so.

Training

We develop training as a service for customers who need specialized or highly technical content. We are also developing training videos and other content that we will share through public platforms, and some of this training is sponsored.

Tutoring and Mentoring

We believe that scientists and engineers have a responsibility to teach. Our staff members provide hourly tutoring services, and mentor interns and graduate students. We are also happy to act as guest lectures and, when it makes sense, to teach courses at universities.
